IP10 Exam: Social Media and Student Research

I got some of the informaiton from The Media Psychology Blog and additional information from the CTV website.

Social media is mostly used on the Internet and mobile-based technology for sharing and discussing information. There are positives and negatives to the use of social media and the effects it has on students. Surprising research results have shown that students are strongly attached to their electronics in a negative way. When the University of Maryland made their students give up all of their electronics (they weren't even allowed to read the newspaper) for a day, the students felt isolated, miserable and bored to distraction. Also some were anxious. They weren't just frustrated, but they felt like they couldn't function and felt hopeless. The students had unknown addictions to their electronics.

However, there are positives to students using their electronics. Media helps us keep in contact with each other, and now sites (such as Facebook) are promoting their privacy features. It helps us keep in contact with family and friends, even if they are a long distance away (even across the ocean). People are also able to find out able new events (whether it's local, national or international) almost as soon as they happen (for example the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico).
